Olympians Lead World Aquatics Championships Team in Singapore
Olympic Champion Daniel Wiffen and bronze medallist Mona McSharry will spearhead Swim Ireland’s 12-strong swimming team into the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore exactly one year after the Paris Games, which saw the Irish swimming team return from Paris with three medals.
Swimming and Diving at the World Aquatics Championships run from July 27th to August 3rd at the Singapore Sports Hub in Kallang, Singapore. The team have spent a week on training camp in Kuching, Malaysia, ahead of their arrival in Singapore on Wednesday.
Wiffen, McSharry, Olympic Finalist Ellen Walshe, Olympic Semi-Finalists Tom Fannon and Danielle Hill, as well as three- time Olympian and December’s World Championships (SC) medallist Shane Ryan will be joined by recently crowned European U23 Champion Ellie McCartney, European U23 silver medallist Eoin Corby and European Junior Champion John Shortt. Evan Bailey, Jack Cassin and Cormac Rynn complete the swim team while Paris Olympian Jake Passmore will be the sole representative for Ireland in Diving.
Speaking on the expectations of the team ahead of the opening day of competition, Team Leader and Coach John Szaranek said ‘Expectations are that everyone is here, everyone’s in good form and everyone’s looking forward to racing, so, they’ve a great opportunity to showcase their talents on the World stage. For some this will be their first ever exposure to this level of meet, it’s all about experience, about seizing the moment, doing what they can when they stand up on the blocks and if they can perform at their best level, then we’ve got a chance to make some progressions. It’s going to be really difficult, we expect them to have to swim as fast as they possibly can in the mornings and then we take it from there.’
On Sunday, the opening day of competition, Daniel Wiffen , who will look to defend his Doha 2024 double of the 800m and 1500m Freestyle titles will compete in the 400m Freestyle, Ellen Walshe will be joined by World (LC) debutant Ellie McCartney in the 200m Individual Medley, Shane Ryan competes in the 50m Butterfly, while Eoin Corby makes his first appearance at a World (LC) Championships in the 100m Breaststroke.
