Singapore 2025: Spain’s Tio Casas earns women’s solo free gold and team technical bronze at World Aquatics Championships
Spain’s Iris Tio Casas, already the winner of two bronze medals at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore, added gold and bronze today in, respectively, the women’s solo free and team technical finals.
The 22-year-old from Barcelona, whose earlier successes had come in the women’s solo technical and team free events, reached the top step of the podium in the solo free with a score of 245.1913.
Second, 4.1888 behind, was China’s 19-year-old Huiyan Xu, who earned her first world title in Saturday’s solo technical routine.
Neutral athlete Vasilina Khandoshka, silver medallist in the technical final, earned bronze, narrowly ahead of Austria’s Vasiliki Alexandri, silver medallist in 2023, whose triplet sisters Anna-Maria and Eirini-Marina won yesterday’s women’s duet technical final.
Germany’s Klara Bleyer was fifth.
A few hours later Tio Casas was one of the eight women representing Spain in the team technical final, where their Backstreet Boys theme secured them third place on 294.8575.
Defending champions China, whose team included Huiyan Xu, won gold on 307.8001, and silver went to the neutral athletes team, who scored 300.6183.
Victory in the women’s solo free was secured with a performance to Hymne a L’amour, sung by Celine Dion at the Paris 2024 Olympics Opening Ceremony.
“It means a lot, because it’s my first World Championship gold in a solo event,” she told World Aquatics. “I’m super happy, I can’t believe it right now. My parents are in the stands. It really was a dream come true. I’m a little bit shocked.”
