Auboeck announces retirement from swimming
Three-time European medallist and 2021 400m freestyle world short course champion Felix Auboeck has announced his retirement.
The 28-year-old Austrian made his European debut at the 2013 European Junior Swimming Championships in Poznan, Poland, before going on to replicate the feat at world level. A senior European Short Course debut in the same year followed, but it was at the 2016 European Championships in London where he began to turn heads. A fourth-placed finish in the 400m freestyle, alongside a debut Olympic appearance in Rio, was enough to put him right in the mix.
The 2021 European Championships provided him with his first trip to the podium as he claimed silver in the 400m freestyle. He missed out on the podium in that event a few months later at the Tokyo Olympic Games, but bounced back the following year in Rome to take European bronze in the 200m freesttyle.
Auboeck’s European title win came last year in Belgrade, once again in the 400m freestyle. He finished four seconds clear as he clocked what was the latest in a series of Austrian records..
His final international outing came at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where he combined racing in open water swimming and the pool.
Auboeck also secured BUCS and NCAA university swimming titles during his swimming career as he balanced academic success with his time in aquatics. He is also a representative on the Austrian Olympic Committee, and plans to continue being involved in the sport.
