[Baseball] GC's ninth inning rally comes up one short

The flood gates opened in the wrong direction and Georgetown College baseball got caught swimming upstream in an elimination game Saturday. University of Pikeville trailed by one with two outs in the seventh of the Mid-South Conference tournament in Bowling Green, Ky. With both teams' postseason futures on the line, the Bears claws came out. However, GC with its back to the wall swatted with all its might, coming up one run short of a rally for extra innings, 13-12.

Pikeville (27-23) started the top of the seventh with a leadoff walk. A wild pitch advanced him to second, but two outs seemed to make it another routine inning in a 2-1 game. A two-out double tied it, and it was all downhill from there. UPike scored 12 runs off 10 hits (all with two outs), knocked four pitchers from the game – three that did not record an out – and in a crazy twist needed every one of those runs.

Georgetown (32-19) sent 13 batters to the plate, scored 10 runs in the bottom of the ninth and were a swing away from erasing that devastating seventh inning. Ryan Viramontes highlighted the inning with a three-run home run for a 13-12 game, but the Bears pitching finally came through and closed the door with a strikeout.
