Peaty looks to Paris after victory in long course return at Edinburgh International
Adam Peaty marked his long-awaited return to long course competition with victory on the third and final day of the Edinburgh International – and is now setting his sights on next weekend’s Giant Open in Paris.
Britain’s 31-year-old triple Olympic champion, who last raced in a 50m pool at the Paris 2024 Games, won the 50m breaststroke in 27.33, having finished fourth in the previous day’s 100m breaststroke.
Peaty – who married Holly Ramsey, daughter of celebrity chef Gordon Ramsey, in December last year – took part in short course competition during the 2025 World Cup series, but this was his first victory since the British Championships in 2024.
At the Paris 2024 Games the multiple champion and world record holder missed securing a third consecutive Olympic 100m breaststroke title at the La Defense Arena by 0.02 as he and Nick Fink of the United States earned joint silver behind Italy’s Nicolo Martinenghi.
Peaty is next planning to compete at the Paris Aquatics Centre built for the 2024 Games, which will also host the European Aquatics Championships this summer.
After his 100m race, which was won by Britain’s double world and European junior champion Filip Nowacki in 1:00.26, Peaty also spoke of his intention to race in the Commonwealth Games that will be held in Glasgow from July 23 to August 2, where his is likely to be concentrating on the 50m breaststroke.
“I don’t think I’ll be doing 100, but we’ll see,” he said. “But again, that’s what makes sports great, and I think it’s one of the best decisions for the 50s to be back in, because the older athletes continue to go and continue to race.”
Reflecting after clocking 1:00.74 in his opening race, Peaty added: “Honestly, I don’t really care what the scoreboard says right now. I think this journey is going to be very, very different as I look towards LA. I can’t go into every single competition expecting to be the best or the fastest. It’s just not possible when I’m older.”
Nowacki, 18, who finished fourth in the 50m breaststroke, completed the 100m/200m breaststroke double in the Royal Commonwealth Pool.
Elsewhere in the Edinburgh events Freya Colbert, who won world 400m medley gold in 2024, became the first British woman to better 1.55 for the 200m freestyle as she lowered her national record to 1:54.98.
Matt Richards swept the 50m, 100m and 200m freestyle events and now heads towards next month’s British Championships which will determine places for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Meanwhile the weekend’s Lausanne Cup brought together rivals Maxime Grousset of France and Noe Ponti of Switzerland, respective world gold and silver medallists in the 50m and 100m butterfly last year.
As at the Singapore Championships, Grousset won both events.
First he clocked 22.78 to take the 50m butterfly ahead of Ponti and Italy’s Paris 2024 100m backstroke champion Thomas Ceccon, who both recorded 23.07.
The next day Grousset, who also won the 50m freestyle, secured victory in the 100m butterfly in 51.15, with Ponti second in 51.47.
Ceccon won the 50m backstroke in 24.95, with Belgium’s Noah Verreth second in a Belgian record of 24.98. Verreth had earlier set a Belgian record of 54.14 in the 100m backstroke.
