The Maltese Government has committed itself to developing strategic projects involving drowning prevention, inclusive sport development and coach education in partnership with European Aquatics and the Aquatic Sports Association of Malta (ASA Malta).

Discussions took place on February 13 between the two sports bodies and Clifton Grima, Minister for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation, on the subject of initiatives to be developed in Malta in 2026.

The meeting was attended by Karl Izzo, President of ASA Malta, and David Bonello, Vice President Swimming for ASA Malta, together with Antonio Silva, President of European Aquatics, and Silvia Costa, European Aquatics Project Manager.

The Minister proposed three clear projects to be developed by European Aquatics, Sports Malta and ASA Malta, to be agreed and formalized in April 2026.

They were:

the development of a Learn-To-Swim/PD inclusive approach to be implemented as from the next academic year

the implementation of the coach certification programme for Aquatics

cooperation in the Swimming Special Olympics event being organised in Malta in September 2026

The meeting confirmed a strong alignment of vision and strategic priorities, positioning Malta as an important partner in advancing education, inclusion and development within European Aquatics.
