Rip currents close beaches to swimming during final weekend of the season

0 30

NEW YORK (PIX11) -- This weekend marks the final hurrah for New York City beaches before they close for the season, however, final getaway plans may be marred by rip currents.

Beaches operated by the NYC Parks Department in the five boroughs will close swimming for the season on Sunday.

Ahead of that closure, though, beaches were closed to swimming on Friday due to life-threatening rip currents forecasted by the National Weather Service.

The red flag warning was issued through 9 p.m. on Friday, according to a social media post by Notify NYC.

During the off-season, New Yorkers can still sit, stroll or jog on beaches, but cannot swim or wade in the water.
