Shortt Top Seed for Backstroke Final in Romania
Ireland’s John Shortt has qualified as the top seed for the Men’s 200 Backstroke Final at the World Aquatics Junior Championships on Sunday morning.
With 100m Backstroke Gold and 50m Backstroke Bronze already secured this week, the 18-year-old will be on the hunt for a third medal across three events in the 16.16 (IRL) Final, on the last day of competition in Otopeni, Romania.
The National Centre Limerick swimmer was impressive in the morning heats, leading throughout the race to finish in 1:57.53, his fourth fastest time ever, and almost two seconds ahead of second seed David Melnuchuk of the USA in 1:59.31.
Shortt has a lifetime best and owns the Irish senior and junior record in the event in 1:56.61 from the Irish Open Championships in April this year.
A further press release will issue following this afternoon’s Final.
