Day 4 Report – Youth and Senior Championships
The penultimate day of the 2025 Irish National Youth and Senior Championships took place today in the National Aquatic Centre with twenty-five national titles awarded throughout the day.
Baltazar Allende opened the penultimate evening of racing in superb fashion, clocking 2:10.02 to win the 15yrs Open 200m IM national title. The 16 yrs category saw Phelim Hanley claim another national medal, as the Blackrock swimmer clocked 2:08.59 to win gold.. In the 17 yrs event, Cody Lau representing Ballymena stopped the clocke first, touching in 2:12.38. Alexander Newman of Bangor claimed top spot on the podium in the 18 yrs race with a time of 2:11.91. In the 19 yrs & Over category, Jacob Armon from Banbridge led the field, finishing first in 2:12.42.
Next on the schedule was the Female 200m Backstroke, Sylvie Marley (Templeogue) claimed victory in the 15yrs with a time of 2:30.34. Her Templeogue teammate Chloe Dawnay was first home in the 16 yrs race in 2:26.98. In the 17 yrs category, Ashling McCarthy representing Trojan took the win with a time of 2:20.93. There was a stacked field in the 18yrs and over race, featuring Paris Olympians Grace Davison (Ards) and Victoria Catterson (National Centre Dublin), along with international swimmer Maria Godden (National Centre Limerick). It was Davison who came out on top finishing first in 2:13.86.
In the 15 yrs Open 400m Freestyle event, Helge Ho of Aer Lingus secured the national title with a time of 4:15.09. The 16 yrs event was taken by Tadgh O’Brien from Dolphin, who continued to impress, finishing in a time of 4:08.63. In the 17 yrs category, Paddy Cuddihy of Kilkenny emerged victorious with a time of 4:09.16. Denis O’Brien from National Centre Limerick dominated the 18 yrs race, ripping through the water to stop the clock in at 3:56.99, a consideration time for December’s European Aquatics Championships (25m). In the 19 yrs & Over category, Sean Bugler of Sundays Well claimed top spot on the podium to bring the national gold to Cork with a time of 4:08.63.
The 15 yrs took to the blocks next for the Female 400m Freestyle event, as Yifei Li of Laois Marlins took first place with a time of 4:41.05. The 16 yrs race was won by recnet European Junior representative Lucy O’Brien (National Centre Limerick), finishing in 4:33.74. In the 17 yrs category, Holly McInerney of Templeogue claimed victory with a time of 4:34.67. While Rebekah Friel of Dundalk topped the 18 yrs & Over field, touching in at 4:23.26.
In the 15 yrs Open 200m Butterfly, Lucas Nian of Tallaght claimed victory with a time of 2:14.23. The 16 yrs event was won by Phelim Hanley from Blackrock, who finished in 2:05.95. In the 17 yrs category, Levi Clarke of Glenalbyn took first place in 2:18.55. Alex Barrett of Sundays Well secured the win in the 18 yrs race with a time of 2:07.86. In the 19 yrs & Over category, Liam Óg Mathers from Banbridge finished first in 2:13.34.
Earlier in the day, Templeogue brought the Female 15yrs and over 800m Freestyle Relay back across Dublin with a time of 8:55.61.
