2025 Irish Age Group Championships Comes to a Close in Limerick
After four days of exciting racing, the 2025 Irish National Age Group Championships came to a close this evening in Limerick, with eighteen gold medals awarded throughout the final day of competition.
Bangor started the morning off with a relay double. The first came in the Mixed 200m Freestyle Relay (12yrs), where they posted a time of 2:04.51. This was quickly followed by another gold, this time in the Mixed 400m Freestyle Relay (13/14yrs), finishing in 4:02.27.
Aicha Clifford (Longford) and Hanna Zlotnik (Lurgan) went stroke for stroke throughout the Girls 1500m Freestyle. It was the Longford swimmer, Clifford, who claimed gold in 19:54.80, with Zlotnik finishing closely behind. Clara Moran (Bluefin) was the only swimmer to break the 19-minute barrier in the 14yrs race, winning gold in 18:48.48.
The first medals awarded this evening were in the Girls 100m Freestyle, with the 12yrs up first. In a tightly contested race, Una Casey of Blackrock touched home first with an impressive 1:04.88, edging out the competition with a strong finish. The 13yrs title was claimed by Chloe Stewart of Bangor, who set the standard with her time of 1:01.29. In the 14yrs category, Lucy Mowlds from Trojan took the top spot with a winning time of 1:00.34, getting her hand to the wall just 0.05 seconds ahead of second place.
Next on the schedule was the Open 400m Freestyle. Alvar Joakit of Wexford led the field in the 12yrs category, taking gold in 4:46.77. The 13yrs title went to Callum Brown of Portadown, who clocked 4:37.41. In the 14yrs event, Anton Nieuwoudt ensured the gold didn’t have to travel far, as the Limerick swimmer came home fastest in 4:26.89.
Bangor’s Chloe Stewart claimed her second national gold of the night – this time in the 13yrs Girls 400m IM, clocking 5:11.29. Bangor topped the podium once again as Rebecca Lavery delivered a strong swim to secure the national title in 5:11.58.
In the Open 200m Butterfly, Daniel Jordan of Wexford powered through the race to take 12yrs gold with a time of 2:34.04. Bradley Walker from Portadown claimed the 13yrs title in 2:32.55, while in the 14yrs event, Dara Hynes, also representing Portadown, posted 2:18.28 to top the podium.
The Girls 200m Butterfly was the penultimate event of the competition. Quinn Allen (Aer Lingus) claimed the 12yrs gold, finishing in 2:43.37, just edging out her closest rival. The 13yrs title went to Olivia Falls of Bangor, who touched first in 2:31.82. In the 14yrs event, Eva Butler (Trojan) swam to gold in 2:28.90.
The Open 200m IM brought the competition to a close. Eamonn Li (Tallaght) topped the podium in the 12yrs with a time of 2:34.83. Eoghan McQuillan (Lisburn) went 2:26.44 to take the 13yrs gold, while Logan Wiggins of Bangor clocked 2:21.18 to win the 14yrs national title.
