Swimming Towards Sustainability: ASR Initiatives at the European Aquatics Open Water Swimming Championships Stari Grad 2025

0 36

Together with the Tourist Board Stari Grad and the Croatian Swimming Federation, European Aquatics is proud to deliver an ambitious programme of Aquatics Social Responsibility (ASR) initiatives that aim to set a new benchmark for sustainable sporting events across Europe.

Inspired by the successful implementation of sustainability measures at recent European Aquatics events, the European Aquatics Open Water Swimming Championships Stari Grad 2025 will carry forward that legacy with a holistic and transformative approach. The Sustainability & Legacy Plan for the competition is built around a shared vision: to minimise environmental impact, foster long-term social and economic benefits for the host community, promote healthy and active lifestyles, and advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through the power of sport.

Recognising that the health of athletes, aquatic environments, and society are interlinked, the organising partners are taking meaningful action to protect natural resources – especially water – and combat biodiversity loss. The plan invites everyone involved in the event, from athletes and officials to volunteers and spectators, to take part in this collective journey towards a more sustainable future by adopting small but impactful behaviours that reduce their personal environmental footprint.

At the heart of the strategy are five key priorities. First, the creation of a dedicated Green Task Force will ensure that sustainability remains a visible and guiding force throughout the event. This small but committed team will monitor energy use, manage recycling stations, and help educate participants about environmentally responsible practices. Their presence will be crucial in embedding sustainability into every aspect of the event experience.

Plastic reduction is another cornerstone of the strategy. The Championships will feature temporary water refill stations located throughout the venue, and all athletes and staff will receive reusable water bottles to help eliminate single-use plastics. Plastic cups will be replaced by sustainable alternatives, reinforcing the message that environmental care begins with daily habits.

In the area of waste management, the organisers are prioritising reuse and responsible disposal. Decorations used at the venue will be reusable, waste sorting stations will be clearly marked and well monitored, and volunteers will assist in promoting proper recycling behaviours. These efforts aim to dramatically reduce landfill waste and raise awareness about the impact of consumption choices.

Beyond environmental concerns, the Championships also embrace broader sustainability goals through local partnerships and clean energy initiatives. Collaborating with local food producers and caterers not only reduces the event’s carbon footprint but also supports the local economy and promotes regional cuisine. Meanwhile, solar-powered phone charging stations will offer a practical example of how renewable energy can be integrated into everyday life.

Crucially, these initiatives are not limited to the duration of the event. By aligning with the sustainability strategies of the town of Stari Grad and the Croatian Swimming Federation, the plan seeks to leave behind a meaningful legacy. Community engagement, awareness campaigns, and long-term partnerships will help ensure that the values promoted during the Championships continue to influence local life long after the final race has finished.

Further details about the Sustainability & Legacy Plan will be shared in the lead-up to the Championships through the official channels of European Aquatics, the Tourist Board Stari Grad, and the Croatian Swimming Federation.
