Prep swimming: Terra Linda’s Butler wins a section title
Terra Linda High’s Ben Butler took first place in the boys 100-yard freestyle and placed second in the 200 free at the North Coast Section swimming championships in Concord on Saturday.
Butler’s victory gave Terra Linda a section-title winning swimmer for the second consecutive year after Nicolas Arinduque won the 100 breast in 2024. TL placed sixth as a team with 149 points, just two points behind fifth-place Las Lomas.
Butler touched the wall first in the 100 free with a time of 44.83 seconds and was second behind Foothill’s Luka Mijatovic in the 200 free with a time of 1:36.04.
Butler qualified for the State Meet and set MCAL league records in both events. State is set to take place at Clovis West High beginning with diving on Thursday, swimming prelims on Friday, and finishing with swimming finals on Saturday.
Marin’s top swimmer on the girls side was Tam’s Addison Everage, who took third place in both the 100 fly (55.89) and the 100 back (54.56). Everage posted an automatic qualifying time for State in the 100 back and a consideration time in the 100 fly.
Marin Academy’s Cameron Forbes posted an automatic time of 1:51.17 to place second in the 200 free and a consideration time of 51.57 in the girls 100 free, placing seventh.
The Terra Linda boys also made it to the championship finals in the 200 free relay (1:24.53), the 200 medley relay (1:33.86), and the 400 free relay (3:08.32) — placing in fourth, seventh, and eighth, respectively. All three times were good enough to automatically qualify TL for State.
The other individual standouts for the Trojans were Arinduque, placing sixth in the 100 breast in 56.11 (automatic) and Jackson Wright taking seventh in the 50 free in 21.13 (consideration).
The Marin Academy boys also placed two individuals and one relay team in championship finals on Saturday. The girls 200 free relay posted a consideration time of 1:40.24 to finish in eighth.
On the boys side, William Canori posted an automatic time of 46.32 to qualify for State in the 500 free, placing sixth at NCS. Riggins Scheumann had a consideration time of 46.35 to place seventh in the 100 free.
