Vermont officials warn boaters of cold-water swimming dangers

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10)-- Vermont State Officials are warning boaters of potential dangers when swimming in cold water during May. According to officials, although air temperatures may be warmer, water temperatures remain around 40 to 50 degrees.

"It’s critical that early season boaters understand the dangers of cold-water immersion and take precautions to ensure that everyone recreating on the water gets home safely," said Al Johnson, boating law administrator for the Vermont State Police’s Marine Division.

Cold water immersion, according to the state, can potentially cause drowning or hypothermia for swimmers. Johnson said entering the water unprepared during cold temperatures can reduce survival times, "causing rapid breathing, loss of dexterity, and other physical incapacitations."

According to the state, boaters can take precautionary measures and prioritize safety to minimize the risks and enjoy the water. To remain safe on the water, state police are asking boaters to remember these tips:

  • Check the forecast
  • Consider postponing small boat activities
  • Dress for the water, not for the weather; wear a life jacket over your coat or bring extra clothes
  • Wear a life jacket
  • File a float plan; let someone know where you're going and when you plan on returning.

Also, Vermont State Police and Game Wardens encourage boaters to take a boater education class before hitting the lake this summer.

If a Vermont boater is stopped in New York and found without a boater safety certificate, New York’s Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, Director of Marine Services and Recreational Vehicles, Alexi Howland, said the consequences are up to the discretion of the officer conducting the vessel stop.
