McGing Makes Olympic Debut in Paris

Ciara McGing made her Olympic debut at the Centre Aquatique on Tuesday morning.  The 23-year-old who has been suffering from a viral infection since the early hours of Sunday morning, was on an intravenous drip all day Sunday and unsure she would be able to compete. But with the excellent support of the Team Ireland doctors she was able to start this morning and complete her five dives.

Finishing 29^th on 188.50 points, McGing’s best score came from her third dive, a reverse 2 ½ somersaults for 50.40 points.

Speaking after the preliminaries McGing said ‘I’m just really grateful that I got on the boards this morning, if this was yesterday, I wouldn’t be here this morning and so I’m just so very grateful to the doctors in Team Ireland that helped me get here today and I know I still have to be proud of myself that I dove today, not at my best but.’

‘I am proud and I’m just so grateful that my family were here and got to see me, you know I think there’s 50 people in the crowd I think that have come here to watch me, all the people at home as well, I’m just so grateful that they were here for me, and I know it wasn’t my best, but they still got to see me dive in the Olympics.’

First up for Team Ireland on Tuesday morning, Jake Passmore takes to the Boards for the 3M Springboard preliminary. The youngest competitor in tomorrow’s field, Passmore is only completing his second year in the senior ranks. The 19-year-old, who was 44^th at World Championships in 2023, qualified for the Games after a 17^th place finish in the semi-final at the 2024 World Championships in Doha.
