Safety warning issued ahead of summer swimming

BERKSHIRE COUNTY, Mass. (NEWS10) -- With this week's heat, many are looking for ways to cool off. Swimming in one of the many lakes and rivers around the Capital Region is a great way to beat the heat, but it doesn't come without some dangers.

Berkshire County officials issued a warning to parents and children as the summer swimming season starts.

"Knowing how to swim is essential, but it's just the beginning," Berkshire County District Attorney Timothy Shugrue said. "Always swim with a buddy, never alone. Always heed the warnings of lifeguards and swim in designated areas where help is readily available."

Officials also urged boaters to take necessary safety precautions and stay vigilant on the waters.
