Afghan-born swimmer wins silver at World Para Swimming Series

Abbas Karimi, Afghan swimmer won silver medal at World Para Swimming Series tournament in Texas on Friday.

He achieved his medal in the men’s 50m butterfly S5 category.

Karimi in a Facebook post said, won this medal for 80 million refugees in the world.

The Afghan-born swimmer is reportedly selected into the Refugee Para Athletes Team for Tokyo Olympics.

During the 2017 World Championships in Mexico City, he became the first refugee to win a medal at a Para-swimming event and received his gold medal at the World Series in Indianapolis.

He is training to get Paralympic medals in Tokyo Olympics, more than 100 swimmers have gathered in Louisville, Texas for the 2021 swimming contest.

Karimi has maintained first place in 50m and 100m freestyle and 50m butterfly heats in his category, and second place in the 200m freestyle heat, and is expected to participate in 50m backstroke event in his category today.

The para swimmer athlete will be the first afghan, if he makes it to the Paralympics.
