Old School Goggles, Father O’Flanagan’s Patented Goggles

International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame Honor Swimmer Rosemary George from Dover, England mentioned her stylish eyewear that she used to wear on her English Channel crossings during today’s WOWSA Live interview with Ned Denison.

O’Flanagan’s goggles was a brand of goggles patented by Father Michael O’Flanagan. The issue was granted on July 10th 1926.

George picked up her trusty pair of these “submarine specs” at her local Boots pharmacy.

Father O’Flanagan (1876-1942) was ordained a Catholic priest in 1900 and prolific patent holder. A following article about Father O’Flanagan’s goggles appeared in the Irish Press on May 27th 1932:
