Red Sox Legends Reunite For Tim Wakefield Memorial Golf Tournament
Fifty years after leading the Boston Red Sox to the 1975 American League pennant, the club’s iconic outfield of Jim Rice, Fred Lynn and Dwight Evans were back together again on Monday.
The trio reunited for the Tim Wakefield Memorial Golf Tournament — the Red Sox Foundation’s annual golf tournament at Belmont Country Club. Lynn posted a picture of the three smiling legends at the event on X with the following caption:
“And there’s the ‘75 outfield. On the field again.. just a different field. Tim Wakefield Memorial Golf Tournament. @RedSox @nesn Let the game begin. #goodtimes #goodcause.”
The fundraiser is held in honor of Wakefield and his wife, Stacy, who passed away from cancer in October 2023 and February 2024.
The Wakefields were heavily involved in the Red Sox Foundation and other local charities, working closely with several hospitals and community outreach programs over the years.
Wakefield, who pitched for Boston from 1995 to 2011, joined the team several years after Rice, Lynn and Evans all retired. However, he worked alongside Rice as a studio analyst for NESN after he retired.
Rice, Lynn and Evans are all in their 70s now, but they still remain close. Evans and Rice were teammates for 16 seasons from 1974 to 1989, while Lynn was their teammate from 1974 to 1980 before being traded to the California Angels.
With Rice in left, Lynn in center and Evans in right, they formed one of the best outfields in team history. Rice and Lynn both won AL MVP awards while Evans was a perennial Gold Glove winner, with Rice ultimately being elected to the Hall of Fame.
Together, they helped lead the Red Sox to the 1975 World Series, for which they were honored in several 50th anniversary tributes earlier this year. While they’ve since traded in their bats for golf clubs, they’re still a formidable trio on the links.
