Red Sox Announce Trade Deadline Acquisition Dustin May’s Debut
The Boston Red Sox’s biggest pickup from the 2025 MLB trade deadline will make his debut for the team during their three-game home series against the Houston Astros.
Right-handed starting pitcher Dustin May — who was acquired in a deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday — is slated to take the bump for Boston’s Sunday morning contest against the Astros.
The Red Sox announced the rest of their probable pitchers for the important series on Friday morning as well.
“The Red Sox announce Cooper Criswell will start tonight’s game against the Astros. Walker Buehler will go tomorrow and Dustin May will make his Red Sox debut on Sunday,” Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald posted on Bluesky.
Cooper Criswell was called up from Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday for his fourth stint in Boston this season. He’s allowed nine runs (six earned) on 16 hits and three walks with five strikeouts across 10 2/3 innings pitched in 2025. All six of Criswell’s outings this year have come out of the bullpen.
Walker Buehler (May’s former teammates in Los Angeles) has gone 6-6 with a 5.72 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 71 strikeouts in 89 2/3 innings (18 starts) during his first season with the Red Sox.
May is a hard-throwing 27-year-old who’s been plagued by injuries during his career. May has stayed healthy this season, however, already setting career highs in games (19), starts (18) and innings (104) among other categories.
The 2016 third-round pick will enter his Red Sox debut with a 6-7 record, 4.85 ERA and 1.34 WHIP.
