Celtics Rumors: How Boston Views DeAndre Ayton After Surprise Buyout
Their depth chart at center is a bit questionable after the Boston Celtics traded Kristaps Porzingis and watched Luke Kornet reportedly agree to terms elsewhere. And it’s no guarantee veteran Al Horford re-signs with the Green, especially given the list of contenders showing interest.
However, Boston is not expected to show interest in 2018 No. 1 pick DeAndre Ayton, according to a report from MassLive’s Brian Robb on Monday morning. Given the hectic nature of free agency, Robb included the clarifier: “at this point.”
Kornet reportedly agreed to sign a four-year, $41 million deal with the San Antonio Spurs shortly after the start of the legal tampering period. It takes the Celtics out of the running to retain the fan-favorite big man. But as things currently stand, the Celtics reportedly are expected to prioritize Horford over Ayton.
Boston also reportedly agreed to terms with depth big Luka Garza on Monday.

The Portland Trail Blazers elected to buy out the 26-year-old Ayton on Monday morning. Ayton had $35.6 million left on his contract so he’ll hit free agency once he clears waivers, the expected result given such contract.
The Celtics cut payroll significantly to start the offseason by trading Jrue Holiday and Porzingis. Boston is under the second apron of the luxury tax and continues to look to gain financial flexibility. Any upcoming signings likely will be minimal.
Ayton averaged 16.4 points and 10.5 rebounds while shooting 59% during his seven-year career. He recorded 14.4 points and 10.2 rebounds per game with Portland last season, his second season with the franchise.
