EN, FR, PR: South Africa, Malawi shine on day one of CAF ASFC COSAFA Qualifier
South Africa and Malawi have shone in both the Boys and Girls competitions on day one of the CAF African Schools Football Championship | COSAFA Qualifier being staged in Walvis Bay, Namibia on Friday.
There is a long way to go in the qualifier, but those two nations have made an early statement of their championship credentials on a thrilling opening day of action that was packed with goals and excitement in the Under-15 competition.
Malawi have taken charge of Group A in the Boys competition after they claimed a 5-0 win over hosts Namibia and followed that up with a 4-0 success against Lesotho.
Malawi were beaten finalists last year as they lost on penalties to South Africa, and will be desperate to go one better this time round. It has been a bright start for them.
Zambia forfeited their opener 3-0 to Lesotho as they were absent but followed that up with a 1-0 victory over Namibia in their second game to remain very much in contention for the semifinals.
Namibia are not quite out of it yet but will need to beat Lesotho handsomely in their final fixture on Saturday to stand a chance, and hope too that Malawi defeat Zambia.
South Africa booked a semifinal place from Group B with a narrow 1-0 win over Zimbabwe that was followed by a more comprehensive 3-0 success against Angola.
They now have six points and the results in the rest of the group mean they cannot finish outside of the top two.
Angola and Eswatini played to a 1-1, with the latter and Zimbabwe to play two games on Saturday.
Malawi and Namibia are locked together on four points at the top of Group A in the Girls competition. Malawi drew 2-2 with Namibia in their first game before a thumping 5-0 success over Lesotho.
The Zambian Girls will not take part in the competition in Walvis Bay so their matches are all awarded to opponents by a 3-0 scoreline.
That means Malawi have effectively reached the semifinals as they will have seven points when awarded that game on Saturday and cannot finish outside of the top two.
Namibia got their 3-0 win over Zambia and the 2-2 draw with Malawi, so it is essentially between them and Lesotho for the second semifinal place from the pool. They will meet at 10h00 CAT (08h00 GMT) on Saturday to decide who advances, with Namibia needing just a draw.
South Africa top Group B in the Girls competition after a pair of thumping wins as they defeated Zimbabwe 7-0 and then completed a 13-0 victory over Angola. That is one goal shy of the competition record 14-0 win over Angola they registered last year in Harare.
That has almost certainly assured the defending champions of a place in the semifinals.
Eswatini are currently in second place in the pool after they defeated Angola 5-0. They and Zimbabwe have only played a single game so far and it will be a crunch battle between those two on Saturday for second place in the group.
South Africa have claimed the title in the Boys and Girls competitions in the previous two years during the events that were staged in Malawi and Zimbabwe.
The top teams in this year’s competition advance to the continental finals to be played in 2025. The South African Girls are the current African champions.

Le Malawi et l’Afrique du Sud prennent une option
Que ce soit chez les garçons ou chez les filles, le Malawi et l’Afrique du Sud ont pris les devants dans l’African Schools Football Championship dont le coup d’envoi a été donné vendredi à Walvis Bay en Namibie. Chez les hommes, les Malawites ont réalisé un sans-faute en en engrangeant deux victoires dans le groupe A et en marquant neuf buts. Ils ont aussi gardé leur cage inviolée. Le Lesotho et la Zambie suivent juste derrière avec trois unités respectivement alors que la Namibie n’a toujours pas débloqué son compteur. Mais à ce stade de la compétition, l’hôte du tournoi est déjà éliminé.
Dans le groupe B, les Sud-Africains ont disputé deux rencontres également et ont brillé à chaque fois. Ils ont inscrit quatre buts et n’en n’ont concédé aucun. Ils devront rester sur leur garde car leur dauphin dans ce groupe, en l’occurrence l’Eswatini, n’a disputé qu’un match. L’Angola et le Zimbabwe ont respectivement un et zéro point.
Chez les dames, le Malawi a un peu ramé. Une victoire et un nul illustre le parcours difficile des Malawites qui sont toutefois parvenues à se hisser en tête avec quatre unités au compteur. La Namibie a un bon coup à jouer dans ce groupe A puisque ses représentantes possèdent aussi quatre points. Le Lesotho est troisième avec trois points alors que la Zambie doit encore trouvé le chemin de la victoire.
Dans le groupe B, l’Afrique du Sud a été très démonstrative et s’avance comme la grande favorite de ce tournoi. Les Sud-Africaines ont décroché deux victoires en autant de sorties mais ont surtout marqué 20 buts sans en encaissé.
On connaitre les demi-finalistes et les finalistes ce samedi. Les pays participants devront avant toute chose terminer la phase de groupe avant de se lancer dans les rencontres du dernier carré.
Les qualifications, réservées aux garçons et filles de moins de 15 ans, se dérouleront en Namibie du 11 au 13 octobre, où les deux vainqueurs des catégories garçons et filles représenteront la zone COSAFA lors des finales de la CAF African Schools Football Championship l’année prochaine.
A noter que les rencontres se jouent à 11 contre 11, mais chaque mi-temps dure 20 minutes avec une pause de 10 minutes entre les deux. La finale des filles se jouera dimanche à 09h00 et la finale des garçons à 10h00.
Malawi e África do Sul entram a dominar
As equipas representantes da África do Sul e do Malawi, nos escalões de sub-15 em ambos sexos, estão a um passo de garantir uma vaga nas meias-finais do Campeonato Africano de Futebol Escolar da CAF | Qualificador da COSAFA para a temporada 2024/25, que arrancou hoje, Walvis Bay, Namíbia.
Com efeito, a África do Sul venceu no primeiro jogo a sua congénere do Zimbabwe pela margem miníma de 1-0, enquanto no segundo embate venceu Angola por 3-0, isto no que aos rapazes diz respeito. Malawi, por sua vez, ainda em masculinos, conseguiu o resultado mais expressivo do dia após golear a anfitriã, Namíbia, por 5-0, fazendo o mesmo, na segunda partida, com o Lesotho, desta vez por 4-0.
Na categoria masculina, o Malawi tem sido impecável com duas vitórias no Grupo A, marcando nove golos e mantendo a baliza inviolada. Lesoto e Zâmbia seguem de perto com três pontos cada, enquanto a Namíbia ainda não pontuou. Nesta fase, a equipa anfitriã já está eliminada.
No Grupo B, a África do Sul também disputou dois jogos e destacou-se em ambos. Marcaram quatro golos sem sofrer nenhum. Devem manter-se vigilantes, uma vez que o Eswatini, o seu concorrente mais próximo no grupo, apenas disputou um jogo. Angola e Zimbabué têm um e zero pontos, respetivamente.
Na categoria feminina, o Malawi teve algumas dificuldades. Uma vitória e um empate ilustram a sua jornada difícil, mas conseguiram liderar o grupo com quatro pontos. A Namíbia também tem uma oportunidade no Grupo A, já que a sua equipa também possui quatro pontos. Lesoto está em terceiro lugar com três pontos, enquanto a Zâmbia ainda procura a primeira vitória.
Este ano, Angola, Eswatini, Lesoto, Malawi, a anfitriã Namíbia, África do Sul, Zâmbia e Zimbabwe estarão representados.
A equipa feminina sul-africana sagrou-se campeã continental em 2023/24 e parece ser novamente a equipa a bater em Walvis Bay.
As oito equipas estão divididas em dois grupos, cada um com quatro equipas, com as competições de rapazes e raparigas a decorrerem em paralelo no Estádio Jan Wilken.
As duas melhores equipas de cada grupo avançam para as meias-finais, e apenas o vencedor que levanta o troféu garante um lugar no evento principal continental.
O formato afastou-se das escolas individuais em 2023, mas a África do Sul prevaleceu na competição de rapazes com uma vitória dramática nos penáltis sobre o Malawi na decisão, enquanto a equipa feminina venceu o Botswana por 3-1, conquistando outro título para o país.
Nas finais continentais deste ano em Zanzibar, em Maio, os vencedores de ambas as competições masculina e feminina receberam um prémio de 300 000 dólares americanos para ser investido em projetos de desenvolvimento nas escolas.
Os vice-campeões receberam 200 000 dólares, enquanto os medalhados de bronze levaram para casa 150 000 dólares.
Salientar que evento foi idealizado pelo Presidente da Confederação Africana de Futebol (CAF), Dr. Patrice Motsepe. Esta iniciativa é de âmbito continental tem como objetivo proporcionar aos jovens futebolistas uma primeira experiência de competição a nível continental.
