Australia, Mexico book Super Round spots in Group B; four teams battle for three places in Group A
With one day remaining in the Opening Round of the WBSC U-23 Men's Softball World Cup 2026, Australia and Mexico became the first two teams to qualify for the Super Round. Australia defeated Denmark to secure first place in Group B, while Mexico claimed a dramatic extra-inning win over Venezuela to lock up second place on Tuesday.
In Group A, four teams are battling for the three available Super Round spots. Czechia, Japan and New Zealand are tied atop the standings at 3-1, while Argentina sits fourth at 2-2. The final day of the Opening Round will determine the group standings.
Carlos Parra was the player of the day, delivering a dominant performance to lead Mexico to a key 2-1 win over Venezuela in extra innings. Parra tossed eight innings, striking out 13 while allowing just two hits and one run.
Rio Takahashi also delivered a standout performance for Japan, striking out 14 over seven innings in a 3-1 win over New Zealand.
Canada set a new tournament record for most runs scored in a game with 20, surpassing the previous mark of 17 set by Venezuela earlier in the tournament.
On Wednesday at Estadio Eduardo Porras, Denmark and Mexico will open the day at 13:00, followed by Czechia and New Zealand at 16:00 in a decisive matchup for Super Round qualification. Venezuela and Canada will close the day at 19:00, with third place in Group B on the line.
At Estadio 20 de Enero, Singapore will face Australia at 14:00, South Africa will take on Argentina at 17:00, and Japan will meet Colombia at 19:00 to close the Opening Round.
