Title race narrows to six teams at WBSC U-23 Men’s Softball World Cup
The WBSC U-23 Men’s Softball World Cup Opening Round came to an end on Wednesday in Sincelejo, with six teams securing their place in the Super Round starting tomorrow.
Australia, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Czechia and Venezuela advanced to the next stage as the final group standings were confirmed.
In Group A, New Zealand’s win over Czechia secured the Black Sox a Super Round berth, while Japan’s victory against Colombia finalized the standings, awarding Czechia the final qualifying spot.
Japan and New Zealand finished tied atop the group at 4-1, with Japan claiming first place thanks to a head-to-head win. Czechia and Argentina also tied at 3-2, but the European champions advanced after defeating Argentina in their matchup.
In Group B, Venezuela and Canada faced off in a decisive elimination game, with a Super Round spot on the line. Venezuela displayed its offensive power, defeating Canada 12-0 in four innings.
The result confirmed the final Group B standings, with Australia finishing undefeated at 5-0, followed by Mexico (4-1) and Venezuela (3-2). These three teams will continue their title pursuit in the Super Round over the next three days. Canada (2-3), Denmark (1-4) and Singapore (0-5) will compete in the Placement Round for final positions.
Czechia and Venezuela will make their first-ever Super Round appearances at the U-23 Men’s Softball World Cup, improving on their seventh- and eighth-place finishes, respectively, in 2023. Meanwhile, Argentina (bronze medallist in 2023) and Canada (fifth place) miss out on the Super Round for the first time.
Defending world champions Australia, along with silver medallists Japan, and Mexico and New Zealand, all return to the Super Round for the second consecutive edition.
