Umpires get Giancarlo Stanton double call wrong at least twice
New York Post (sports)
Some sage philosopher once claimed you will see something new in every baseball game. Well, Thursday the Yankees came up with a home run that looked like a triple, became a double, but could have been foul.

Allen: Astrophysicist baseball aficionado expounds on MLB blisters

Society for American Baseball Research (SABR)

From Jim Allen at Kyodo News on August 16, 2018, with mention of SABR members Meredith Wills and Alan Nathan:

On June 6, Shohei Ohtani was sidelined with yet another blister, and because of a baseball- and knitting-loving astrophysicist, we now understand more about why Ohtani's blister developed.

Although a shock to his many fans, Ohtani's injury represented just another data point in an increasingly frequent problem.

[Men's Soccer] Cavs fall to Fire in season opener despite extra time

Montreat (North Carolina) Cavaliers

BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C. – The Cavaliers were outlasted 2-1 by the Southeastern Fire in extra time Thursday afternoon to open their season at Pulliam Stadium.

The game proved to be very frustrating for the offense as the Cavs outshot the Fire 8-6 in the second half, and 16-15 in the entire match.

"Regarding the offense, I think we need to finish our chances," said Head Coach Michael Bruce.

MLB misses a chance to prove a point by only suspending Jose Ureña 6 games for beaning Ronald Acuña Jr.

SB Nation: Toronto Raptors

This would have been the perfect chance for a culture shift.

Beaning is part of baseball. It’s retaliatory, it’s necessary, it’s simply part of the game. That’s what we’ve been hearing from many corners in the day since José Ureña beaned Ronald Acuña on the very first pitch of the game with a 97 MPH fastball for no reason besides the fact Acuña had been lighting up Marlins pitchers for a home run during every game of the series.
