[Men's Soccer] Late OT goal lifts No. 21 Briar Cliff to 1-0 win over Men's Soccer Falcons
WICHITA, Kan. –After nearly 108 minutes of scoreless soccer, the No. 21-ranked Briar Cliff University Chargers found the net with 2:25 remaining in the second overtime to win 1-0 in the Friends University Falcons' season-opening match today (Aug. 28) at Adair-Austin Stadium.
The Falcons had multiple looks to break through on the scoreboard, including a header from Juan Zamora (JR/LaBelle, Florida) that was just wide of the net in the first half and a shot by Fernando Ramirez (SR/Westin, Fla. ) that narrowly sailed wide in the second overtime session.
Marcus Horwood then gave the Chargers the win by capitalizing on a deflection in the box to score the game's only goal late in the second overtime period.
The final stats reflect how tight the game was played, with the Falcons outshooting the Chargers 7-3 in the first period before Briar Cliff ended up with an 11-10 shots advantage along with a 3-2 edge in shots-on-goal.
Juan Zamora led Friends with four shots and Futo Kubo had three shot-attempts.
Jasper McLeod (SR/Princes Town, Trinidad &Tobago) and Chargers goalkeeper Leandro Faria each stopped two shots.
Next up for the Falcons is another top 25 test at No. 9-ranked Mid-America Christian University on Tuesday night (Aug. 31) at 7:30 pm in Oklahoma City.
