Armenian weightlifting legend Yuri Vardanyan dies in US aged 62

Legendary Armenian weightlifting champion Yuri Vardanyan has died in the United States aged 62.


The report on his demise was confirmed to Tert.am by the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs.


The procedures of transporting Vardanyan’s body to Armenia are now being discussed.


A seven-time world champion and a five-time champion of Europe, the sportsman broke five records in one evening three times throughout his career, increasing the duel outcome to a record of 405kg.


Vardanyan was Armenia's minister of sport and youth affairs between 2013-2014; subsequently, he served also as the Armenian ambassador to Georgia.


In his lifetime, Vardanyan was honored with several medals, including Labor Red Star, Holy Mesrop Mashtots, etc.
