The Kick-Off Meeting of the European project AquaSafe Kids (ASK)  began today in Malta, bringing together partners from across Europe for the launch of this ambitious 36-month initiative.

Hosted by the Aquatic Sports Association of Malta (ASAM) as project coordinator, the meeting gathered representatives from European Aquatics, including its President Antonio Silva.

Also present were representatives of the Swimming Federations of Austria, Croatia, Estonia, Georgia, Hungary and Bulgaria, together with SportMalta and the University of Zagreb, highlighting the strong European and collaborative dimension of the project.

ASK is an educational project within the Erasmus + Sport scheme which is focused on promoting water safety, drowning prevention, and basic aquatic skills among children.

The project aims to raise awareness, build knowledge, and encourage safe behaviour in aquatic environments through engaging and age-appropriate educational approaches.

During the opening session, partners reaffirmed the strategic importance of AquaSafe Kids within the Erasmus+ Sport framework and aligned on the project’s long-term vision, objectives and expected impact.

The first day of work focused on presenting the overall project structure, priorities and implementation roadmap.

Particular emphasis was placed on promoting healthy lifestyles and strengthening water safety education among children – the project’s primary target group – while also recognising the key role of educators and parents.

Inclusivity was highlighted as a principle guiding all activities.

The agenda also included presentations of the different work packages, discussions on governance and collaboration mechanisms, and in-depth sessions on curriculum development, pilot implementation and the future digital platform that will support the project’s objectives.

This was the first of two intensive working days, setting the foundation for a dynamic and results-oriented collaboration and delivering meaningful outcomes for water safety education across Europe.

The key objectives of this 36-month initiative are to:

Encourage healthy and active lifestyles from an early age

Increase participation in swimming and aquatic sports

Promote social inclusion, including children with disabilities

Improve water safety and confidence

Malta’s warm hospitality as project coordinator provided the perfect setting for launching this important European initiative.
