Polish hosts name powerful team as final entries declared for European Aquatics Short Course Swimming Championships Lublin 2025

Hosts Poland have named a 26-strong team for the European Aquatics Short Course Swimming Championships that start in Lublin on Tuesday.

The final list of entries for Championships that will run from December 2 to 7 comprises 533 athletes from 45 countries, with other largest teams belonging to Italy (32), Germany (31), Sweden (29), Spain (25), Finland (24), Hungary (22) and France (20). At the other end of the scale Malta, Montenegro and Monaco are each represented by a single swimmer.

The Polish selection includes 33-year-old Katarzyna Wasick, who has so far accrued six medals from these Championships and who took world short course and long course bronze in the 50m freestyle last year.

Twenty-one-year-old Krzysztof Chmielewski, fourth at Paris 2024 and a double world silver medallist in the men’s 200m butterfly, is named along with twin brother Michal, who finished one place behind him when he won the world junior title in 2022.

Adela Piskorska, winner of a gold and two silvers at this summer’s EA U23 Championships in Samorin, is also named, as is Dawid Wiekiera, who won EA U23 50m breaststroke bronze.

Another 21-year-old, Klaudia Tarasiewicz, who won three legs of the EA Open Water Swimming Cup in her debut season as an outdoor swimmer, returns to competitive action in the pool.

Lukas Maertens, the Paris 2024 400m freestyle champion who added world gold this year as well as lowering the almost 16-year-old record set by fellow countryman Paul Biedermann, has now declared to compete.

Germany’s team has also been supplemented by two open water specialists who maintain highly competitive profiles in the pool.

Florian Wellbrock, who won four golds at this summer’s World Aquatics Championships in Singapore, is on the roster, as is Oliver Klemet, the Paris 2024 10km silver medallist.

Meanwhile Portugal have included 21-year-old Diogo Ribeiro, who won 50m and 100m butterfly at last year’s World Aquatics Championships in Doha and who secured two golds and a silver at this summer’s EA U23 Championships.

Carles Coll Marti, who earned Spain’s first world short course title in 10 years when he won the men’s 200m breaststroke at last year’s World Aquatics Swimming Championships (25m), is among the final entry of   athletes named for the European Aquatics Short Course Swimming Championships starting next week.

The 24-year-old, who set a national record of 2:01.55 to earn his first senior international medal, reached the 200m breaststroke final at this summer’s World Aquatics Championships in Singapore, finishing seventh.

Bulgaria’s team includes 20-year-old Petar Mitsin, who retained his European U23 400m freestyle title in Samorin this summer, also taking silver in the 100m and 200m freestyle at the Slovakian venue.

Croatia have selected Jana Pavalic, who won world junior 50m freestyle bronze after being disqualified for a starting infringement after coming home first in the women’s 50m freestyle at the European Juniors.

Finland’s selection includes 20-year-old Laura Lahtinen, bronze medallist in the women’s 200m butterfly at the EA U23 Championships in Samorin.

The Greek team includes Andreas Vazaios, who already has 10 European short course medals to his credit and has come back after a year out following the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Lithuania’s 10-strong team includes Ruta Meilutyte, who won a fourth consecutive world long course 50m breaststroke title this summer who will be seeking a sixth European short course gold.
