McSharry Breaks Breaststroke Irish Record for Fourth
Ireland’s Ellen Walshe and Mona McSharry continued their fine start to the short course (25m pool) season at stop two of the World Aquatics World Cup in Westmont, Illinois, with a silver medal and two new Irish Records on the opening day of racing.
Walshe upgraded the bronze she won in the 200m Butterfly at stop one of the World Cup in Indiana to silver in a new Irish Record of 2:04.38 on Friday night, knocking .45 of a second off the record of 2:05.07 she had set just last weekend. In Indiana, the Templeogue swimmer had smashed Ireland’s oldest short course record of 2:07.04, which had stood since 1997.
In the heats, Walshe had clocked 2:08.16 to finish second and progress fifth overall.
The USA’s Regan Smith won gold in a new World Cup and US Open Record of 2:00.20 with bronze going to Australia’s Brittany Castelluzzo in 2:05.43.
Mona McSharry broke the Irish 200m Breaststroke Record for the second week running when she finished fourth in the 200m Breaststroke Final in 2:19.29.
The Olympic medallist had set a new standard of 2:19.95 at stop one last weekend.
Both swimmers return to racing on Saturday, Walshe in the 400m Individual Medley and McSharry in the 100m Breaststroke.
