The final day of the women’s Champions League Qualification Round saw some intense action and drama, as the remaining tickets to the main stage of the Champions League Women were confirmed. ONE Eger produced a spectacular late show to sink a spirited ANC Glyfada iRepair, while ZV De Zaan swept Grand Nancy aside, Pallanuoto Trieste ran out of steam against Assolim CN Mataro, and Spandau 04 Berlin overpowered Lille UC. The group line-ups for the 2025/26 competition, which starts on Saturday 25th October, can be found at the end of this article.

Group A (Glyfada)

ANC Glyfada iRepair (GRE) 12-13 ONE Eger (HUN)

ONE Eger came up with one of the most astonishing comebacks ever to secure the top spot in Group A. With 5:33 to go, ANC Glyfada iRepair appeared to have the win in their hands at 12-8, which would have sent them through and drop Eger to the Euro Cup.

Their four-goal advantage mirrored the domination the Greeks had enjoyed since the beginning, as they had taken a flying start by storming into a 3-0 lead.

The Hungarians were forced to chase the game, but they could barely cut inside the three-goal gap. Glyfada were up by three at half-time (7-4) and even though Eger managed to score twice to make it 8-6, the hosts responded with a double in a span of 38 seconds.

Eger also missed a penalty before the last break and were in serious trouble, as they trailed 10-6 with just eight minutes remaining.

The start of the fourth didn’t indicate there was about to be a huge change in the course of the game, as two goals were netted apiece, and at 12-8, Glyfada could even kill a woman-down and were well on their way to the main Group Stage.

However, a fine counter, finished off by Rebecca Parkes stirred something in their rival’s camp. Turning into the last three minutes, Sienna Owen buried a six on five, and 53 seconds later, Dorina Torok’s hit from the perimeter cut the deficit to a single goal.

The Greeks were frozen and Lili Soti’s distant shot brought Eger back to even with 1:10 to go, at 12-12.

A tie was already a result they were looking for, as they only needed a single point to qualify, but there was still time to add another goal and claim all the points.

Glyfada weren’t creating any danger, and after Eger called a time out at 0:22, 11 seconds later Parkes slammed in the winner from the centre, which propelled her side to the first place, ahead of CN Terrassa, while Glyfada’s late crash ended their Champions League dreams.

Group B (Berlin)

Spandau 04 Berlin (GER) 18-12 Lille UC (FRA)

Lille UC started their final game needing a miracle to go through, a six-goal win against hosts Spandau 04 Berlin, but they ended up losing by six, which was rather on the cards anyway.

The French side did keep up with the Germans in the opening quarter, and even led 1-2 after converting a late penalty, but they conceded a goal three seconds from time and soon they were fading from the scene.

Ira Deike kicked off the second quarter with a hat-trick in just 77 seconds, and soon her team-mates joined the party, as Spandau scored eight goals to lead 10-4 at half-time.

The game may have been practically over, but the French had a better spell in the third and reduced the gap to four goals (13-9), however the Germans geared up again for the fourth and won by six in the end to finish first in the group.

Group C (Dunaujvaros)

Grand Nancy (FRA) 4-26 ZV De Zaan (NED)

After host Dunaujvaros beat both ZV De Zaan and Grand Nancy to top the group, these two sides faced off in a winner-takes-all match on Sunday morning.

The outcome was never in any doubt, as favourites De Zaan cruised to a comfortable victory, with the Dutch setting the tone early by racing into a 6-1 lead in the first period, followed by a 9-0 thrashing in the second.

Last season’s Euro Cup winners stopped at 26, with 11 of their field players scoring in the game, eight of them more than once, to advance to the main Group Stage.

Group D (Dunaujvaros)

Assolim CN Mataro (ESP) 16-11 Pallanuoto Trieste (ITA)

Pallanuoto Trieste fought hard to grab their last chance against favourites Assolim CN Mataro, and at times, a real shock looked a possibility.

Trieste marked their intentions with a strong start as they jumped to a 1-4 lead, but the Spaniards hit back with a 3-0 run early in the second to retake the lead at 6-5.

Still, the Italians kept fighting and in three minutes they scored four goals to go 7-9 up once more. They even had a six on five at the end to extend their advantage, but missed it, which proved pivotal as Silvia Avegno hit a late action goal 18 seconds from half-time for 8-9.

Another missed extra early in the third proved costly for the Italians again, as Mataro scored three goals from their next three possessions for 11-9.

An emergency time-out offered just a brief break for Trieste, as even though Veronica Gant converted a dying extra from close, Mataro’s reply came in just 17 seconds, as Jewel Roemer’s fierce shot found the back of the net.

In the ensuing grand battle, the Spaniards were more precise at both ends. They killed three more women-downs, buried a penalty, and put away an extra for 14-10.

This 6-1 run did the damage, as the Italians were unable to recover in the fourth. An early penalty miss didn’t help their cause either, and soon Mataro added two more before Morgan McDowall converted a penalty.

Trieste missed another penalty late on, but the game was gone by then, so Mataro finished with back-to-back wins against their Italians rivals to top the group.

Meanwhile, Trieste will have to settle for another Euro Cup appearance – a competition they’ve finished as runners-up in the previous two seasons.
