Otopeni 2025: GB’s Fearn earns world junior gold on world record night

Great Britain’s European junior 50m butterfly champion Dean Fearn added world junior gold in the same event on day five of the programme in the Romanian venue.

Fearn, 17, who won bronze in the 100m butterfly, earned top spot on the podium with a time of 23.54, finishing just 0.10 ahead of Nigeria’s Abdul Adama, with the Czech Republic’s Jan Foltyn earning bronze in 23.65.

Fearn’s team-mate Blythe Kinsman, European junior champion in the women’s 50m backstroke, added world junior bronze in that event.

She clocked 28.04 behind Australia’s gold medallist Ainsley Trotter, who recorded 27.88, and 15-year-old South Korean swimmer Seungwon Kim, who took silver in 28.00.

Bronze in the men’s 400m individual medley went to home swimmer Robert-Andrei Badea, European junior champion in this event, who clocked 4:13.79 behind the Japanese pair of Raito Numata on 4:11.37 and Yumeki Kojima on 4:12.99.

Neutral athlete Kseniia Misharina took women’s 1500m silver in 16:12.63 behind Peiqi Yang of China, who clocked 16:08.37, with Italy’s Emma Vittoria Gianelli earning bronze in 16:15.40.

In the concluding event of this evening session at the World Aquatics Junior Swimming Championships – the women’s 4x100m freestyle – the neutral athletes team took silver behind the United States, who set a world junior record of 3:35.53. Italy finished fourth, behind China.
