Singapore 2025: Spain’s artistic swimmers return to podium as China retains team free title
Spain’s artistic swimmers added another medal to their collection at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore as they finished third in the team free event.
China, Olympic champions, retained the title with a total of 348.7779 despite losing two members to injury in the run-up to the Championships, with silver going to Japan.
Using their enterprising “Insanity” routine the Spanish team made a huge impression and might have taken over second place had it not been for a late hybrid base mark that dropped their score.
A selection including the two athletes who had claimed medals the previous day – Dennis Gonzalez and Iris Tio Casas – Spain finished on 321.1328, with Japan totalling 334.7232.
“We made a little bit of a mistake and it’s not good for us, but I’m happy because we are still inside the podium with this little mistake,” Gonzalez told World Aquatics.
“The performance was incredible. I feel this is the best choreography, and today I enjoyed it a lot.”
The United States, silver medallists at Paris 2024 ahead of Spain, were fourth, with Italy taking fifth place.
