Hungary’s 16-year-old Vivien Jackl laid down a big marker in her quest to win a third consecutive women’s 400m individual medley title in the European Aquatics Junior Swimming Championships as she qualified for tonight’s final in 4:42.49.

Jackl, who picked up a 400m individual medley bronze in the 2022 edition aged 13, clocked 4:38.96 to win silver in this event at last year’s senior European Aquatics Championships in Belgrade, where she also won 1500m gold.

“It felt good, even though it’s hot out there,” Jackl told European Aquatics. “I train all summer in an outdoor pool so I am getting used to it. Perhaps it didn’t feel as good as it would in an indoor pool, but it felt okay.”

In a raucous opening session to the Championships, taking place in glaring sunshine at the outdoor pool within Slovakia’s Olympic Training Centre complex, Britain’s Amalie Smith was second fastest qualifier in 4:44.05, with Germany’s Laura Kohlmann clocking 4:45.35 and Belgium’s 200m butterfly champion Sarah Dumont fourth in 4:45.87.

Later in the morning Jackl also booked her place in tomorrow’s women’s 1500m freestyle final as she clocked 16:29.21 behind Italy’s Emma Gianelli, who recorded 16:28.33.

Both will face a strong challenge from Britain’s 16-year-old Amelie Blocksidge, who took 1500m and 800m freestyle gold in Vilnius last year, with Jackl earning respective bronze and silver.

Blocksidge won the second of the three heats in 16:36.87.

Meanwhile Italy look in a good position to make a successful defence of their men’s and women’s 4x100m freestyle titles in tonight’s two other finals.

Italy topped men’s qualifying in 3:19.00 ahead of France on 3:21.66 and Great Britain on 3:22.78.

The Italians also topped qualifying in the women’s relay on 3:43.09, with Great Britain and Lithuania on 3:44.32 and 3:44.62 respectively.

The prospects of a compelling men’s 50m backstroke final tomorrow night are looking strong given the performance his morning of Lithuania’s defending champion Mantas Kauspedas and Ireland’s John Shortt, who will be defending the 200m backstroke title later this week.

Kauspedas, 17, moved through to tonight’s semi-finals with the fastest heat time of 25.29, with the effervescent 18-year-old Irishman just behind him in a personal best of 25.51.

“That was nice to blow off the cobwebs as I haven’t done that event since January so I’m very happy as it’s my first PB (personal best) in that event in two years,” Shortt said.

“So I’m pretty buzzing, especially because I crashed into the lane rope and I’m pretty sure I hit Mantas as well, so think we can definitely go a bit faster tonight.”

Kauspedas, who raced next to Shortt in lane 4, added: “Me and John kind of started holding hands and freakeded out a bit!”

Lithuania’s 16-year-old Tajus Juska, who will start the defence of his 100m freestyle title on Saturday, qualified fastest for semi-finals in the men’s 200m freestyle heats in 1:48.24, with Italy’s Alberto Ferrazza clocking 1:48.71 and Austria’s Christian Giefing on 1:49.28.

Norway’s hugely talented Sander Sorensen was seventh in 1:49.53.

Lithuania’s Smilte Plytnykaite made a good start to her defence of the 50m breaststroke as she produced the fastest heat time of 30.92, with Estonia’s Egle Salu on 30.98 and Spain’s Nayara Pineda Lopez on 31.05.

Also making a strong start in defence of a title was Turkey’s Nusrat Allahverdi, who produced the fastest time of the morning in the men’s 50m breaststroke, 27.62, with Britain’s Filip Nowacki on 27.66.

Allahverdi’s team-mate Tuncer Erturk was fastest in the men’s 200m butterfly heats, clocking 1:58.92, with Poland’s Blazej Dworakowski on 1:59.10 and Hungary’s David Antal on 1:59.34.

Italy’s Bianca Nannucci was fastest heats qualifier in the women’s 200m freestyle in 1:59.99 ahead of neutral athlete Kseniia Misharina on 2:00.50 and Lithuania’s ieva Jurkunaite on 2:00.54, with Nannucci’s team-mate Lucrezia Domina and Poland’s Barbara Lesniewska joint fourth on 2:00.68.

In the women’s 50m backstroke heats Britain’s Blythe Kinsman was fastest in 28.01, ahead of Denmark’s Martine Damborg on 28.39 and Daria-Mariuca Silisteanu of Romania on 28.48, with Italy’s Ludovica di Maria and Chiara Lamanna not far behind.
