Romania’s Olympic 200m freestyle champion David Popovici will make his debut in the European Aquatics U23 Swimming Championships that will take place from June 26 to 28 in Samorín, Slovakia.
The 20-year-old from Bucharest, who also won Olympic 100m bronze in Paris, is one of a total entry of 373 athletes from 42 countries for the second edition of this competition.
Also in the men’s listings is 20-year-old Diogo Ribeiro, who became the first Portuguese swimmer to earn a world title last year when he won gold in the 100m and 200m butterfly at the World Aquatics Championships in Doha.
The women’s entry includes Bosnia and Hercegovina’s 19-year-old Lana Pudar, who last year added European silver in the 200m butterfly to the gold she had won at the 2022 Rome Championships, and who also earned her first world medal in finishing third in the same event at the Doha Championships.
Also set for competition in the women’s racing is Estonia’s 18-year-old Eneli Jefimova, who won the 100m breaststroke title at the 2023 European Aquatics Short Course Championships in Otopeni, Romania.
Four swimmers will defend titles won at the inaugural 2023 Championships in Dublin – Poland’s Krzysztof Chmielewski and Adela Piskorska, gold medallists in the men’s 200m butterfly and women’s 100m backstroke respectively, Bulgaria’s Petar Mitsin, winner of the men’s 400m freestyle two years ago, and women’s 200m backstroke titleholder Aviv Barzelay of Israel.
France are sending the largest team with 26 swimmers, followed by Poland on 24, Germany on 23 and Great Britain on 20.
Malta and San Marino are each sending a single swimmer, with Montenegro and Slovenia selecting two each and Albania, Bosnia and Hercegovina and the Faroe Islands selecting teams of three.
