0 12

European Aquatics has created dedicated websites for its range of U23 and Junior Championships which get underway later this week.

The EA Junior Open Water Championships which start in the Portuguese venue of Setubal on Thursday (June 19) are the first of five events taking place within an 18-day period.

Ending on June 21, they will be closely followed by the EA Junior Diving Championships from June 23 to 29, the EA Junior Artistic Swimming Championships from June 25 to 29 – both to be staged in Athens – the EA U23 Swimming Championships from June 26 to 28 and the EA Junior Swimming Championships from July 1 to 6, with both the latter being held in the Slovakian venue of Samorin.

Romania’s 20-year-old Olympic 200m freestyle champion David Popovici will headline entries in the EA U23 Championships, which is also due to see another super-talented performer in the form of Portugal’s Diogo Ribeiro, who won gold in the 100m and 200m butterfly at last year’s World Aquatics Championships.

Two notable names in the women’s listings are Bosnia and Hercegovina’s 19-year-old Lana Pudar, who already has European gold and silver and world bronze in the 200m butterfly, and Estonia’s 18-year-old Eneli Jefimova, who won the 100m breaststroke title at the 2023 European Aquatics Short Course Championships in Otopeni, Romania.

The EA Junior Open Water Swimming Championships 2025 will be held at Parque Urbano de Albarquel, a venue with a proud history of hosting major international events, including three Olympic qualification tournaments in 2012, 2016 and 2021.

Hungary, which won the Team Trophy at last year’s edition in Vienna for a third time in four years, will be expected to set the pace again. The Hungarian team includes the swimmers who won individual silvers and relay gold in the 2024 Under-16 category – Marton Huszti, Anna Bartalos, Napsugar Nagy and Mate Karparti.
