First National Pool Operators Conference a Huge Success

0 0

On Friday 9 May Swim Ireland and Ireland Active joined forces to deliver the first National Pool Operators Conference. Held on the Sport Ireland Campus, 70 pool managers and operators from across Ireland engaged in networking opportunities and heard from speakers on a range of topics.

Speaking on the success of the conference, Swim Ireland CEO Sarah Keane said, “We are delighted to have worked with our colleagues in Ireland Active to deliver a quality learning experience for pool operators. As members of National Swimming Strategy working group, we are committed to seeking additional funding to support refurbishment of existing facilities and investment in new infrastructure. We hope this conference is the first of many engagements with pool operators, and we look forward to supporting the industry in the coming months and years.”

Pool Operators Donna McGrath (Swim Ireland/Sean MacDermott Street Swimming Pool) and Mark MacManus (LeisureWorld CEO) shared their experiences of maximising their pool usage, through engagement with community groups and clubs, and how regularly reviewing timetables and usage is essential to optimising income opportunities.

With a focus on sustainability, Sports Campus Operations Manager Alan Bennett spoke about the Campus’ Climate Action Roadmap, outlining the measures being taken to reduce carbon emissions. James Raleigh reflected on the renovations undertaken in Westpark Fitness, and the impact this had on energy costs. James also highlighted funding available to providers and how small changes can have significant effects.

In the afternoon, Access Earth CEO Matt McCann and Sarah Hewitt of St. Michael’s House facilitated an engaging session on how to utilise universal design to improve accessibility within swimming pools.

Mary McMorrow, Swim Ireland’s Director of Operations, shared results from recent research “Swimming Facilities Gap Analysis”. The report identified high demand for swimming lessons, the potential for more pools to facilitate swimming clubs, and the need for investment in pool refurbishment and new infrastructure.

Closing out the conference, Clare McGrath, Chairperson of Water Safety Ireland, and Ian Ogilvie from PWTAG provided their expert advice on how to mitigate risk in the pool environment, with a focus on lifeguarding and pool water quality.

Reflecting on the event, Karl Dunne, CEO of Ireland Active, highlighted its significance, stating:

“The Pool Operators Conference is a vital opportunity to bring the sector together, share practical insights, and support the people who keep facilities running to the highest standards. Working alongside Swim Ireland to deliver this event allowed us to combine our expertise and provide real value to operators on the ground. Events like this enable us to exchange ideas, learn from each other’s experiences, and explore new ways to improve safety, efficiency, and service. It was important to have created a platform where collaboration and innovation could strengthen best practices and support the future of our industry.”
