2018 Sunset Outdoor LCM Meet - Summer Fun! [Swim Diesel]

0
One of the things that I think is missing in Ontario for Masters Swimmers is the opportunity to race long course. I'm sure there is lots of history involved etc. but my immediate thought is that most clubs don't have access to a 50m pool, and if they do they get the opportunity to practice in it Long Course even less.

Racing in something that you are not familiar with can seem daunting.

In 2014 I got my 1st taste of racing Long Course. I was immediately hooked. My 1st foray into this strange new world was the Nepean LCM swim meet.

In truth it was a disaster and I left that meet feeling very foolish and humbled. But I got back on that horse. Later that season I raced at the U of T.

And even though your times are all a mess when you leave a LCM meet having swam hard you feel like you've accomplished something. But of all that was a lead up to what was to come, the Masters World Championships.

Maybe this is why I love LCM meets so much. I had so much fun in Montreal that I associate LCM with fun. Hey... it's my blog....

Although I can't seem to locate a picture I know I swam at the Outdoor LCM a few years ago. I went with my teammate Tim. This meet gets tacked on after the kids meet which makes sense. Everything is essentially setup and ready to go.

There were 5 events that were on my checklist of swims that I hadn't done LCM yet. I looked at the lineup and guessed at attendance and played it smart. I only chose 4 events and didn't kill myself. Former Cambridge swimmer Trevor did 6 grueling events (like I normally would have) and felt like he made out with a Mack truck after. I didn't even check my times. I just wanted to do it. I also wanted to once again support a Masters club and MSO. We are coming up on the 2nd full season of the MSO and SO divorce and I am happy to show my face when I can. Some people insist on fear mongering on Facebook... or even warmongering... but so many of us just want to come see faces and swim. That is what we did here.

Yes I got ribbons, and the place on them is how many people swam in my age category. These were for the 200 back, 200 fly, 100 fly, and 50 back. For the record - only the 200IM remains.

Would I like to see more LCM meets? Absolutely. I even eyeball going down to the US just to do them. But I'd like to see them right here in our back yard. I'd like for people to come away from a grueling swim thinking that they accomplished something. LCM are a different beast than SCM. But just like a Clydesdale is different from a donkey... fun can still be had.

A MAJOR thank you to the London Silver Dolphins and crew. Every single official and volunteer was friendly, accommodating, and had a smile on their face. I hope that the attendance to your event grows.

Until I touch the wall.....
