Another gold for Chad le Clos at games

0

Chad le Clos slaughtered his 200m butterfly final to claim his third consecutive gold medal in the event in as many Commonwealth Games.

Shortly after he bagged his second gold medal of the Gold Coast Games, perennial medallist Cameron van der Burgh underlined his class winning his third 100m breaststroke over three editions.

But it was the Le Clos-show as the swimming sensation blew the opposition out of the water hitting the wall first in a time of one minute, 54.00 seconds (1:54.00).

The victory was never in doubt as he maintained a healthy lead for the duration of the four lengths as he improved on his own Games record.

Australia’s David Morgan finished in second place with a time of 1:56.36 with Duncan Scott of Scotland rounding off the podium with 1:56.60.

While world record-holder Adam Peaty of England had the race pretty much wrapped up touching first in 58.84 it was a fight till the bitter end for the remaining two podium spots.

Van der Burgh was just pipped at the final stretch to the wall with Englishman James Wilby taking silver in 59.43 with South Africa finishing third in 59.44.

“I got a bronze medal and with Chad obviously winning the gold it was a really good inspiration,” Van de Burgh said.

“I am really looking forward to the 50m, that is sort of where my area is at the moment with everything is in my life.”
