[Swimming] Women's Swimming fall to Pembroke but top WWC

LAURINBURG, N.C. – The St. Andrews University swim team hosted non-conference foes UNC-Pembroke and Warren Wilson College (N.C.) on Friday at O'Herron Pool in their final tri-meet of the season.

The SAU women upended Warren Wilson 55-47 but fell to UNCP 43-112 while the WWC men ousted the SAU men 42-27.

Individually, however, SAU came away with some quality results as they won six individual events: the women's 100 & 200 Breaststroke, the men's 200 Fly, the women's 50 Free, the men's 100 free, and the men's 500 Free.

Winning events for the women was sophomore Chiara Knebelkamp (SO/Muelheim an der Ruhr, Germany) while freshman Caden Wendelin (FR) won for the men.  

Knebelkamp started it off for the Knights by winning the 100 Breast in 1:13.48 beating out her five competitors by at least three seconds. She then won the exciting 50 Free in 27.3 seconds to edge out her WWC foe by .6 seconds  Knebelkamp then capped her day by winning the 200 Breast in 2:44.7 crushing her competition.

Wendelin won his individual races in the 200 Fly in 2:26.4 while winning the 100 Free in 53.3 seconds to win the event by 4 seconds. He also won the 500 Freestyle in 5:42.

Some other women's results on the day included senior Rachel Widdicks (SR/Hull, England) placing 2nd in the 100 free in 1:07.3 for her best time of the season while also placing 4th in the 50 Free in 30.2 seconds.  Freshman Erica Hocum (FR/Winterville, NC) also had finishes of 3rd in the 100 Breast in 1:36 and 5th in the 100 Free in 1:14, 7 seconds behind Widdicks. Hocum was also second in the 500 Free in 7:07.

The SAU women go to 1-6 on the year while the UNCP women improve to 11-2 and Warren Wilson go to 0-1.

The St. Andrews swimmers will next head to the AAC Championships from Feb. 8-10 in Kingsport, TN.
