Marc Skinner makes ‘something special’ claim about Man United after Chelsea FA Cup defeat

0 12

Manchester United Women exited the Adobe Women’s FA Cup following a 2-1 defeat to defending champions Chelsea at Kingsmeadow on Sunday afternoon.

There was little to separate the two sides until the 78th minute, when Sam Kerr gave Chelsea the lead with a clever finish.

Moments later, substitute Simi Awujo restored parity, beating Hannah Hampton from close range, forcing the game to extra-time.

Naomi Girma gave Chelsea the victory in the first half of extra-time, guiding the ball home from close range.

Despite the result, coach Marc Skinner was proud of his team’s performance.

He told MUTV: “So proud of the players, so proud of all the commitment.

“We’ve just played back-to-back-to-back-to-back games, travelled away, travelled home, and to put that performance in epitomises everything we are.

“It epitomises our fans’ energy, our players’ energy. There’s something special about us.”

United had just two full days to prepare following their 2-0 over Atletico Madrid in the Women’s Champions League on Thursday, while Chelsea had a full week.

Yet, the Red Devils produced a dogged display against Sonia Bompastor’s side.

Skinner also hopes that the defeat will inspire his side for the upcoming games.

United will face Chelsea again after the international break, this time in the Women’s League Cup final.

They then take on West Ham United and Everton in the Women’s Super League before their Champions League quarter-final first leg clash with Bayern Munich.
