Man United Women topple Chelsea in WSL standings after 3-1 Victory Over Liverpool
Manchester United Women registered a second consecutive victory in the Barclays Women’s Super League on Sunday, beating Liverpool 3-1 at Progress With Unity Stadium.
United got off to a bright start, with Elisabeth Terland sending a strike straight into goalkeeper Jennifer Falk’s arms inside the opening minutes.
Terland was involved again, taking advantage of Denise O’Sullivan’s poor defending to shoot at goal, but Falk parried it away for a corner.
Good one-on-one defending from Jayde Riviere prevented Ceri Holland from getting a strike away as the visitors tried to fashion a chance.
The first half ended with no clear-cut chance at either end despite United’s dominance.
Seven minutes into the second period, Man United went ahead through Lisa Naalsund, who received a cutback from Jess Park and lashed into the roof of the net.
Liverpool levelled the scores on 58 minutes as Alice Bergstrom poked the ball home after a huge scramble in the penalty area.
Naalsund restored United’s lead on the hour mark, cutting inside before rifling a shot past Falk.
Jess Park came close to extending the advantage directly from a corner, but Falk was alert to avert the danger.
Park then spurned another chance to put the game to bed, sending a half volley straight at the Liverpool goalkeeper.
Three minutes from time, Fridolina Rolfo sealed the victory, latching onto Hanna Lundkvist’s cross to find the back of the net.
Marc Skinner’s side have now climbed to second on the standings, overtaking defending champions Chelsea, who lost 5-1 at Manchester City.
