Chelsea plotting move to sign Douglas Luiz for rest of season
Chelsea are plotting to sign Douglas Luiz for the rest of the season, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein.
The 27-year-old is currently on loan at Nottingham Forest from Juventus, but he has been struggling for regular football action.
Since joining the West Bridgford outfit, he has made only eight Premier League appearances, with three coming off the bench.
Injuries limited his involvement earlier this season, but he has started twice in the English league since Sean Dyche replaced Ange Postecoglou at the helm in October.
Chelsea already have plenty of options in midfield, but they still want to add Luiz to their ranks in this transfer window.
Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez, Andrey Santos, Dario Essugo and Romeo Lavia are all on their books.
But Essugo and Lavia have struggled with injuries this season, with the former yet to play since making his debut for the Blues in the Club World Cup in June.
Luiz boasts plenty of experience and can operate as a deep-lying midfielder or in a more box-to-box role.
He is highly rated for his dribbling skills, defensive contribution and ball progression.
Luiz started his career at Vasco da Gama before moving to Manchester City as a 19-year-old in 2017.
After a two-year spell at Girona, the Brazilian joined Aston Villa in the summer of 2019.
He played an instrumental role in helping the club to safety on the final day of the 2019-20 season, before two mid-table finishes under Steven Gerrard and Dean Smith.
However, the 27-year-old enjoyed his best football under Unai Emery, as he scored nine goals in 2023-24 to help the Lions to a Champions League finish.
Luiz’s performances in the West Midlands convinced Juventus to spend £42.35 to sign him in 2024.
But the move didn’t work out, as the Brazil international made no goal contributions in 27 appearances for the Serie A club.
