Carrick could unlock potential of £25m Man Utd star with a small tweak to 4-2-3-1

0 1

Manchester United named Michael Carrick as the new head coach for the remainder of the 2025-26 season after sacking Ruben Amorim from the managerial position last week.

The Red Devils now have 17 games to save their season after early exits from both domestic cup competitions.

Securing European football seems to be their target, as they stand just three points behind the coveted fourth spot.

Carrick is expected to lean on the trusted 4-2-3-1 system, a shape that underpinned much of his tactical identity during his time at Middlesbrough.

When in possession, the former United midfielder favours a subtle but clever twist, morphing the shape into a 3-5-2 by pushing his left-back high to provide width in the final third.

Luke Shaw may be the first-choice left-back on paper, but Patrick Dorgu appears far better suited to executing this demanding brief.

The young Dane has been used across multiple roles in recent weeks, underlining his versatility and athletic profile.

Crucially, Dorgu has looked at his best when given licence to attack freely, unburdened by constant defensive responsibility.

The 21-year-old has one goal and two assists to his name in the last five league games.

He impressed with his display as a left winger against Burnley.

Signed for £25 million from Serie A side Lecce last year, Dorgu remains raw but undeniably rich in potential.

His biggest impact has come in advanced areas, where his pace, power and direct running stretch defensive lines and open spaces through the middle.

He could take that role under Carrick, and allow Matheus Cunha (expected to start in the left-wing spot) to drift inside and pair up with Benjamin Sesko or Bruno Fernandes.

This will also bring the best out of Cunha, who is more comfortable in central areas rather than hugging the touchline.

If Carrick commits to this tactical blueprint, Dorgu will shoulder a crucial dual responsibility, balancing attacking thrust with defensive recovery.

A strong showing during this short spell could even see the youngster stake a serious claim to becoming undroppable for United next season.
