Red Sox Should Target Recently Non-Tendered Dodgers Champion

The Boston Red Sox moved on from multiple relievers this week through trades and non-tenders. The team must reload the bullpen, and with plenty of experienced relievers non-tendered, the Red Sox have some new options in free agency.

Among the list of players non-tendered by their teams is Los Angeles Dodgers’ World Series champion Evan Phillips. Phillips was injured for most of last season, but has been a major part of the Dodgers’ bullpen since 2021.

He underwent Tommy John surgery in June, but recently posted a video of himself throwing on Instagram. He is on the way back, but the Dodgers clearly thought a roster spot was more valuable. Phillips has eight seasons of experience in the big leagues and could be a great addition to any team.

Before the Dodgers claimed him, he was just an average reliever, but after getting to Los Angeles, he quickly became a star. From 2022 to 2024, he pitched in 187 games for the Dodgers and had a 2.21 ERA. He also notched 44 saves for the team. In a total of 201 games with the Dodgers, he has a 2.22 ERA.

During the Dodgers’ 2024 World Series run, he appeared in five games, and in 6 2/3 innings, he did not allow a single run. He was a key player in the Dodgers’ bullpen for years, but now he is a free agent. His injury recovery will play a major role in his market, but he could be a low-risk, high-reward addition.

The Red Sox bullpen already has a closer in Aroldis Chapman. However, Phillips is an arm the team could deploy in a setup role. When healthy, he was one of the better relievers in baseball.

He has thrived in pressure situations as well. He has a 1.74 ERA in save situations in his career. Opponents hit just .186 against him in high-leverage situations. He has one more season of club control before hitting free agency again.
