Red Sox Insider Reveals Team’s Exciting Spending Plans For Offseason
After missing the playoffs three years in a row, the Boston Red Sox were more aggressive last season, and it paid off.
Not only did they add legitimate stars in Garrett Crochet, Alex Bregman and Aroldis Chapman, but they also locked up several of their best players to contract extensions, including Crochet and Roman Anthony. The increased spending pushed the Red Sox over the first luxury tax threshold for the first time since 2022, helping them secure their first playoff appearance since 2021.
Despite having considerable money coming off the books this offseason in Lucas Giolito, Walker Buehler and potentially Alex Bregman if he doesn’t re-sign, Boston is reportedly planning to surpass the luxury tax again in 2026, according to MassLive’s Sean McAdam.
“According to people familiar with the team’s thinking, it’s understood that the Sox are fully expecting to be over the first CBT threshold of $244 million,” McAdam reported on Friday.
“Exactly how much over remains to be seen and may well depend on the opportunities that are presented,” McAdam clarified. “Industry sources suggest the Red Sox understand they’re at a point in their competitive window that they have to spend more aggressively to put together a roster capable of going deeper in the playoffs.”
Boston exceeded the first luxury tax threshold by roughly $5 million in 2025. If it goes over the tax again next year, that will be the first time the franchise has done so in consecutive seasons this decade.
With their young talent emerging and starting to realize their potential, the Red Sox believe their title window is open and are prepared to spend accordingly. After winning just one playoff game in 2025, the roster still requires additional investment to become championship-caliber.
McAdam’s report aligns with Craig Breslow’s comments at the GM meetings earlier this week, where he expressed confidence in having the necessary resources from ownership to build a contender.
With Breslow able to spend aggressively, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him add another star or two this winter.
