'Not many': Roy Keane blown away by what £45m Man United phenomenon pulled off vs Liverpool
Manchester United ended their Anfield hoodoo with a stunning 2-1 victory over arch-rivals Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday.
Bryan Mbeumo fired Man United ahead after 62 seconds, but Cody Gakpo brought the hosts level in the second half.
The home crowd was fully behind their team, but it was Harry Maguire who silenced the stadium with a heroic match-winning goal in the 84th minute.
United skipper Bruno Fernandes struggled in the second half but delivered a moment of sheer class when it mattered most.
Sky Sports pundit and former United captain Roy Keane praised the midfielder’s touch and technique.
He said (via Sky Sports): “I would say 99 players out of 100 would have controlled that. The pace it (ball) is coming at him. Not many players could do that.”
The 31-year-old covered every blade of grass and looked exceptional alongside Casemiro at the centre of the park.
He could have been on the scoresheet himself after Amad Diallo teed him up perfectly in the first half, only for his curling effort to cannon off the bar.
He had another half-chance to put his side 2-0 up, but his shot was blocked.
His performance dipped in the second half as he looked exhausted. He lost possession 14 times, prompting head coach Ruben Amorim to prepare a late substitution in the 85th minute.
Fernandes conjured a moment of magic worthy of winning any match, right before his substitution.
The £45 million-rated superstar fed Mbeumo from a corner routine, whose shot was blocked, only for the rebound to fall invitingly to the United captain.
The Portugal international could have taken a touch to control the ball before firing a cross into the box.
However, he produced a breathtaking first-time volleyed cross, floating it to the far post, where Maguire powered home the winner with an unstoppable header.
