Ruthless Raiders rout Bassett
One week after such a promising performance earned a valuable point away at Westfields, Royal Wootton Bassett Town came crashing back down to earth with a heavy 7-2 Hellenic League Premier Division defeat away against Worcester Raiders.
Bassett were overmatched by their promotion chasing opponents, shipping seven unanswered goals before eventually being able to muster two consolation strikes late on.
It was just the eighth time that Bassett have conceded at least seven times in a Hellenic League match, the last time being a 7-1 reverse at the hands of Corsham Town two years ago.
A pair of quickfire goals put Raiders in command midway through the opening period. Their first came when Jake Donnelly powered home a header from a corner before Fred King immediately doubled their advantage with a close range finish.
With half time looming Kiyan Baker-McKay made it 3-0 - and following the restart the floodgates opened.
George Baker's delicate finish made it 4-0 before Adam Taylor headed in on the hour for 5-0.
With twenty minutes remaining Manny Olaloko scored with a rebound effort after Taylor was initially denied by Lewis Clark.
Three minutes later Clark was having to retrieve the ball from his net yet again as Taylor struck a half volley into the bottom corner.
Raiders had been ruthless with their finishing, punishing Bassett for some wayward defending througout the match with this performance a far cry from that which had seen Jonny Aitkenhead's side leave Westfields with a point.
Although wounded, Bassett salvaged some pride late on. A Jordan Stoddart own goal got the visitors on the scoresheet. Ben Cleary then netted his eighth of the campaign.
That second goal meant Bassett became just the third side to put two or more goals past Raiders in the league so far this season. However, having conceded seven that distinction is of little value.
