Bruins Coach Gives Young Players Sound Advice Ahead Of Season

Boston Bruins coach Marco Sturm has some advice for the team’s young players looking to earn a roster spot.

Boston has plenty of young players competing for roster spots, like Fraser Minten, Matthew Poitras, and Matěj Blümel, who all played on the same line in the Bruins’ 3-2 shootout preseason loss to the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday.

As the three players have made a good impression, Sturm says he told them to enjoy the moment and have fun, as getting to play in the NHL should be enjoyable.

“They practice so hard and so well the whole time, and I feel like in games, they think too much,” Sturm said after the game. “So I gotta get them out of that. Just don’t think. Play the game. It’s a tough league, but it’s even tougher when there’s a lot going on in your brain. I want them to play free and just play and have fun.”

It’s sound advice from Sturm, as he wants the young players to just focus on having fun and playing their game. The Bruins coach believes that when players think too much and worry too much, that is when their play struggles.

Although Sturm did like the lines play in the preseason game, whether or not they will make the Bruins’ opening night roster is to be seen.

Boston added more depth players this offseason to add roster competition, so the young forwards could begin the season in the AHL and further develop.

The Bruins open their season on Oct. 8 on the road against the Washington Capitals.
