Champions League | PSG 4-0 Atalanta: Dea outclassed in Paris

0 123

Atalanta could thank Marco Carnesecchi, who also saved a penalty, for keeping the scoreline down in their 4-0 defeat to Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain.

La Dea had stuttered under new coach Ivan Juric, travelling to Paris without Gianluca Scamacca, Ederson, Sead Kolasinac and transfer rebel Ademola Lookman. Surprisingly, 21-year-old Lorenzo Bernasconi was given his first start for the club just days after his Serie A debut, with Daniel Maldini preferred to centre-forward Nikola Krstovic. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia shook off a bruised shin to start, but Ousmane Dembélé, Désiré Doué and Lucas Beraldo were injured, with Kang-in Lee not fully fit.

See how it all unfolded on the Liveblog.

It was the worst possible start, as within two minutes the hosts had opened the scoring when Fabian Ruiz sprung the offside trap down the left and rolled across for the tap-in from ex-Roma defender Marquinhos.

It should’ve been 2-0 moments later when Nuno Mendes went clear on a ball over the top that surprised Odilon Kossounou, but was denied one-on-one by a remarkable Marco Carnesecchi reaction save.

The goalkeeper also got down for a one-handed save to deny Bradley Barcola relatively undisturbed, then made a stunning fingertip save when Fabian Ruiz’s back-heel flick set up Achraf Hakimi.

Atalanta finally created a chance of their own on 18 minutes, but Kossounou ballooned over from 12 yards on the Charles De Ketelaere lay-off.

Barcola did have the ball in the net after Mario Pasalic was robbed in midfield, but he was offside when firing into the near bottom corner.

Pasalic nodded over from eight yards, but just as Atalanta had begun to settle, they went 2-0 down to a moment of solo magic from ex-Napoli star Kvaratskhelia. He gathered deep into midfield, surged forward through the middle and swept in from the edge of the area with the inside of the right boot.

Yunus Musah had his first start for Atalanta, but gave away a penalty when he clumsily trod on the boot of Marquinhos, spotted by VAR. Barcola stepped up, but the weak and scuffed spot-kick was smothered by Carnesecchi to keep Atalanta alive.

Paris Saint-Germain did get their third after the restart, as Nuno Mendes got down the left, cut back to send Marten de Roon to ground, then drilled through Carnesecchi’s legs from the tightest of angles.

Pasalic’s header didn’t bother Lucas Chevalier, while Raoul Bellanova shinned a volley from 12 yards and Nikola Krstovic’s half-volley was smothered.

Carnesecchi got down for a one-handed save on Ibrahim Mbaye’s angled drive, but there were more problems when substitute Giorgio Scalvini went off injured.

Bellanova gifted the fourth in stoppages with a horrible back-pass, not realising Goncalo Ramos was ready to intercept and beat Carnesecchi from point-blank range with a delicate dink.
