Spiders Support Glasgow SE foodbank against St Johnstone

QUEEN’S PARK FC is well supported by our southside community – and the club is committed to returning that support back to our community too.

Next week the club will be open for donations to help Glasgow South East Foodbank, based along the road in Govanhill. For more than 14 years it has supported those in our area who most need our help and has provided food aid and welfare support to people in crisis in the local area.

Supporters attending next weekend’s match with St Johnstone are asked to bring along non-perishable food items to add to the foodbank’s shelves and help those in need in our local area.

The priority items currently most needed on-site at Dixon Road include:

  • Tinned Tuna
  • Tinned Meat
  • Uncooked Rice
  • Cereal
  • UHT Milk
  • Diluting Juice
  • Tinned Tomatoes/Pasta Sauce
  • Tinned Chickpeas
  • Red Split Lentils
  • Toothpaste
  • Shampoo

Staff at based at The city Stadium have already kicked off the donation drive with a range of groceries, and head coach Sean Crighton added to the effort when he met volunteers Denise Ritchie and Alex Bewley at our home ground this week.

Young footballers in our community football programme will also bring a donation to training next week – just like the first-team squad who will be adding to the Spiders haul, building-up to the match with St Johnstone – and visiting fans are also encouraged to contribute if they can.

Kieran Koszary, head of commercial at the club, said: “At Queen’s Park Football Club we are very aware of our place in the community in the city of Glasgow and our local area here in the southside.

“We have a range of initiatives to help support our neighbours and engage with the local community such as Tickets for Schools and our charity awareness days.

“Supporting the people in need in the south and south east of Glasgow via the foodbank is something we are proud to help as best we can and we are sure the club, community foundation and our fantastic supporters will deliver.”

The foodbank drive was raised at one of the recent fan engagement meetings between the club and the QPSA and Alan Hudson from the supporters group added: “The QPSA are very keen to work with the club to make Queen’s Park FC a really positive part of the community.

“One of the best ways we can do that is supporting local people and organisations, and working with the Glasgow SE Foodbank is a brilliant example.

“It’s great to already have the backing from the club’s staff and players as well as the QP Foundation and hopefully lots of our supporters will also get involved by donating whatever they can when we play St Johnstone.”

Denise Ritchie from the GSE Foodbank said: “We’re so grateful to the team at QPFC and Spiders fans for supporting their local food bank.

“Donations of food and funds are needed more than ever these days, with runaway food prices and families struggling to afford the essentials across the southside of Glasgow. We particularly need the items mentioned above. Financial donations can also be made at the game, or any time via our website.”

Donations of food can be made at the JB McAlpine Pavilion throughout the week and fans attending the game can drop off some non-perishable items at the turnstiles ahead of the game on Saturday, September 27.

Anyone in need of contacting the foodbank for help can follow these steps to be referred.
